1978 Ducati 900 Super Sport
Offered for sale is a rare and exceptional example of a 1978 Ducati 900 Super Sport, which has only three owners since its manufacture. Featuring engine number DM860 087599 and frame number DM860SS 087237, the bike was acquired by its owner in 1986 from a close friend, who accepted a 1976 Triumph Spitfire as a trade. The motorcycle is offered with a clean Ontario title in the owner’s name. A reasonably rare 1977/1978 transitional model, the bike was originally purchased in England in 1979 by the original owner who toured Europe that summer. Returning home to Canada, the bike was first registered in Ontario in 1980. As most 1978 Ducati’s imported to Canada were silver Bosch ignition examples, this transitional model is very rare in Canada. The 1978 series was the final Super Sports with the traditional silver and blue colour scheme and desirable Borrani wire spoked wheels, representing the finest form of these bikes. The 1978 series with Ducati Elettrotecnica and CEV electrics were built towards the end of 1977 as 1978 models and production is estimated at 250 to 300 examples. This example is very well presented and restored to an extremely high standard. Not only is the condition superb, but its originality has also been maintained. Original genuine components are present, and the condition demonstrates a “no expense spared” restoration. Powered by an 864cc L‐twin, featuring desmodromic valve actuation, paired with a five‐speed transmission, the bike accumulated 13,647 miles before restoration, with 692 miles postrestoration. The motor was fully blueprinted by noted Ducati engine builder, Guy Martin. The engine features many internal improvements and upgrades for known Ducati weaknesses including a lightened and balanced crankshaft with 38mm crank pin upgrade performed by Vee Two Australia, polished connecting rods, 87mm HC Wiseco pistons, billet oil pump, Brancato billet magnetic sump screen w/oil strainer conversion, Brancato magnetic dipstick/oil filter platform, gas‐flowed heads with multi‐angle valve seats, MBP collets, and port‐matching. The Ducati Elettrotecnica magneto was upgraded to an Elektronik Sachse ZDG 3.23 electronic ignition with selectable ignition curves and Dynatek 3‐ohm coils. The five‐speed transmission was fully refurbished, including replacement gears where required. A Surflex S1425 Modifica clutch is operated by a Brancato extended clutch actuator arm. The correct kickstart lever is the only method to start the bike. The motorcycle is finished in the correct silver frame and blue fairing with correct stripes and decals accenting the fairing, tank, side covers, and fenders. The optional dual seat (and rear foot pegs), with lockable storage compartment, is included. The correct CEV headlight is ensconced in the front fairing which features the correct fine‐grain CEV instrument panel with five warning lights, a 3‐position ignition switch, CEV cap, and fully restored Smiths gauges. Correct CEV front and rear turn indicators, with side reflectors, are operated by the left handlebar CEV switch. The Tomaselli Daytona 2C throttle operates dual Dell’Orto 40mm carburetors which breathe through the original bell mouths with wire mesh filters. Correct long‐bracket Conti exhausts are included in this example. Shouldered 18″ Borrani 4777 aluminum rims, running on Pirelli tires, are laced with stainless steel spokes to hubs with Brembo shaved body 08 calipers and drilled 280mm front and 229mm rear disc brakes. Suspension consists of 38mm Marzocchi front forks, upgraded with damper rods and sports valves by Sports Motorcycles Ltd of New Zealand. Original refurbished, Marzocchi adjustable shock absorbers are mounted to the rear swingarm. The intention was to create a usable and reliable motorcycle without undue modification that would detract from the originality of this model. Described by noted Ducati expert, Richard Covello as the most thrilling bevel‐drive Ducati he’s ever ridden, demonstrates that a 45‐year‐old bike can be ridden reliably and safely. Ian Falloon, noted Ducati authority, describes this example as “exhibiting exceptional attention to detail, this is one of the finest restored examples of this model that I know of”. This 1977/1978 transitional series Ducati 900 Super Sport features a chassis almost identical to the legendary 1973 750 Super Sport, setting a sporting standard for handling and braking. With bevel driven, desmodromic camshafts, 40mm Dell’Orto carburation, Conti exhausts, all rolling on Borrani wire wheels, this model represents the pinnacle from the golden age of 1970s Italian motorcycles. This example was authenticated by noted Ducati historian, Ian Falloon, which is included with the purchase of the motorcycle. All original parts and engine components replaced during restoration are included. All records of restoration will be provided in electronic format
